Three Consequences of Not Sending a Follow-up Email After Your Interview

INTRODUCTION:

A job seeker asked, “What are the consequences of forgetting to send a thank you email after an interview?”

CONSEQUENCES:

You may not suffer overt consequences from the interviewer for not sending a thank you email after a job interview. The less-obvious consequences are the ones that could make the difference in your getting an offer, or not. Let’s look at three of them.

The first consequence could be the interviewer’s perception that you don’t really want the job. Your after-interview follow up reinforces your serious interest in the opportunity.

If you are an internal candidate, you don’t want to give the impression of being over confident and taking your candidacy for granted. Failing to send that after-interview follow-up thank you can send just that message to your interviewers. Never assume that, as an internal candidate, you have an advantage. Somewhere in that pool of qualified candidates may be an external prospect who peaks the hiring manager’s interest. So, internal candidates, put the same amount of effort into pursuing your target job as you would if you were an external candidate who knew no one in the organization.

After an interview, we all can think of additional things that we could have shared with our interviewers to prove why they should hire us for the job. So, you deny yourself that opportunity when you fail to send an after-interview follow-up email.

IN CONCLUSION:

As “they” say, there’s a consequence for every action, or inaction. Your career is your livelihood. So, take every appropriate opportunity to establish a connection with your interviewers. Let them know that you are still interested in the job. Also, let them know that you would like their continued consideration. And, finally, let them know that you are excited about being considered a serious candidate.
