Three Tips for Answering Behavioral Questions in a Phone Interview

INTRODUCTION:

A job seeker asked, “What are some tips for answering behavioral questions in a phone interview?”

TIPS:

  1. Answer the questions the same way you would if you were the interviewee in an in-person interview;
  2. Always be honest – If you have never faced an experience like the one that the interviewer is asking you about. Tell them that, while you have never faced that scenario, you would respond in this way if you were. Then explain to them why you would respond in the manner that you described; and,
  3. Prior to your interview, think of moments during your career when you faced difficult workplace circumstances. Then, think about how your responded and if you would respond differently in any way if faced with a similar situation again. Or, think about situations where you witnessed others behaving inappropriately and tell the interviewer that you would behave differently…and how.

IN CONCLUSION:

Regardless of whether the interview is in-person, via telephone, or virtual, you answers to the interviewer’s questions should be honest, complete, and thoughtful.
