Give Your Resume High-Impact

INTRODUCTION:

As a career human resources professional and a hiring manager, I’ve seen countless resumes. Some of them were awesome and some of them needed a little help. So, I read some of them and others, I put them aside because they lacked high-impact. And you you don’t want that when you’re applying for your dream job.

HIGH-IMPACT CHARACTERISTICS:

The first high-impact feature that your resume should have is a Consistent Header that consists of a business-appropriate email address. That means that, it should be dedicated to your job search. Also, if you are applying to positions within traditional career fields like Human Resources, Accounting, Product Management, you should use your first name.last name@email service provide name for email address. If you have a very common name, like John Smith, you can differentiate yourself from other John Smiths by incorporating a number or your middle initial, into your email address.

If you are a creative like an actor/actress, an artist, or a performer, you have a little more latitude in creating your email address.

You must also ensure that you showcase a Relevant Skill Set. This means that your skills that relate most closely to the core responsibilities of the job that you are applying for should appear first. Concentrate on the highly-sought after skills that you possess like those technical, mathematical, and/or analytical in nature. Those include data analysis, social media or marketing related.

Create more high-impact in your resume by listing your Work History in Action. Do not be passive. Describe the duties that your performed using words like created, developed, analyzed, reported, etc.

Also, list your work history as bullet points instead of narrative statements. This will make it easier for hiring managers and recruiters to quickly assess your resume’s contents. Be certain to prioritize the bullet points by listing the most-job-relevant bullet points at the top of each list. Don’t make the hiring manager or recruiter have to search for your relevant qualifications.

IN CONCLUSION:

Understand that it is possible to create high-impact in any resume. You just need to be thoughtful in how your present the contents. And the other thing that I didn’t mention earlier is do not forget your soft skills like interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, communication, etc. Those skills that enable you to read body language and shift your focus or approach to keep people engaged..especially in today’s remote and/or hybrid work environments.
