Using a Less-Attractive Job to Land Your Dream Job

What would you do if you’re in the middle of your job search, you know what you want your next dream job to be, but you’re not getting traction from the jobs you want. However, you’re getting a lot of interest from other positions that are not necessarily on your radar for your next career opportunity.

If could be that you’re not getting the job you want because you need to build or improve your skills…your competencies that are core requirements for success in that particular job class.

Do here’s what I recommend that you do. Don’t discount a job because it does not fit your ideal vision of your new position. It could very well be a great stepping stone to your dream job. So, analyze the jobs that you are getting interest from and determine if they would offer you the opportunity to increase your competencies in an area that you need to develop more and increase your marketability for your dream job with your next career move. Select the one that would give you the opportunity, with a year or two of experience to build your knowledge, skills, and abilities in those areas.

You never know. I can tell you from first-hand experience. I am a living example that it can work in your favor. Earlier in my career, I made a conscious decision to move away from specializing in one functional area of HR to Employee Relations where I could touch practically every functional area. Although I had to take a slight pay cut at the time, it ended up being one of the best career decisions that I’ve made. I enabled me to develop new skills, made me more marketable and helped me to achieve the career happiness and success that I enjoy today.

So don’t brush off positions that you initially did not consider as being options for your next career move. It could be just the professional development “shot-in-the-arm” that your career search needs. It could offer a great segway into the job that your really want.
