Introduction:
So, we can hardly go any place these days without getting involved in a political conversation. It’s always like that during an election year.
So, a job seeker asked, “Can an employer ask you, during an interview, who you voted for?” The answer is that here in America…No. A few reasons why are below.
Reasons:
First, it should not be the employer’s concern who you, the potential employee voted for. Their number one concern should be to determine if you have what it takes to do the job well.
Second, asking such questions could violated some local statues or state laws and get the employer in a lot of hot water.
Or three, asking such a question could lead to a lawsuit based on discrimination based on political affiliation, especially, if that candidate is not selected for the position.
Exception:
Now, there is one exception that I know of. If the employer’s line of business is directly related to the political process and it is affiliated with one of the political parties. Those types of organizations may be able to legally ask this type of question.
Recommendation:
I would recommend that if you, as a job candidate, you think twice about working for an employer who asks you who you voted for during your job interview with them. There is something that does not appear appropriate about that type of employer behavior during an interview. Inappropriate behavior during an interview can lead to inappropriate behavior as an employer once you become one of their employees.
