Three Re-hire Eligibility Categories

INTRODUCTION:

A job seeker asked, “When employees resign from their job, how does the employer remember if they’d hire that employee again in the future?”

The answer is that they likely have a rehire eligibility policy or a standard practice that determines if a former employee can be re-hired.

REHIRE ELIGIBILITY CATEGORIES:

We all know that employers don’t rehire employees whom they terminate for bad behavior or poor performance. But, not all employees who voluntarily resign are re-hire eligible either.

Human Resources will usually code former employees’ files using one three re-hire eligibility categories: 1) Re-hire Eligible; 2) Conditionally Re-hire eligible; or 3) Not Re-hire Eligible.

Let’s examine what each one means.

CATEGORIES DETAILED:

  1. If a former employee’s file is coded re-hire eligible, they would be welcomed back with open arms. This is an employee who had not behavioral or performance issues during their time with the employer.
  2. Former employees who had some minor behavior or performance issues during their employment, are typically coded as Conditionally Re-hire Eligible. This means that they may be considered for re-hire if they can prove that they have matured in the areas where the fell short previously. Or, they may be re-hire eligible after a certain amount of time, for example 3 years, has passed.
  3. Finally, some former employees are deemed Not Re-hire Eligible. This means that their behavior or performance violated a major company policy. As a result, the employer will not hire them again.

IN CONCLUSION:

The days of working for one employer for an entire career are gone. So, every employee’s goal should be to leave each employer in a positive light. Let’s face it, we never know what bridges we might have to cross again. So, even if you hate your job, remain professional in your behavior and performance. That way, hopefully, the door will be open to your return if an irresistible opportunity arises and you want to work there again.
