When You Have an Interview Tomorrow
We’ve all been there. We get an invitation to interview…tomorrow. Or, we get an invitation to interview two weeks out. Then, the reality of juggling work, family, and an active job search at the same time sets in. Before we know it, our big interview is less than twenty-four hours away.
But don’t you dare pass up the opportunity to share your career story with your potential new employer. In spite of your feelings of unpreparedness, you could still land the job.
Here are five steps to take your interview preparation from “0” to “100” quickly:
- Practice – Visit https://www.job-hunt.org/job_interviews/smart-interview-answers.shtml. This site gives advice on how to answer the twenty-one most popular interview questions.
- Study – Visit the company’s website and jot down, when some facts about it.
- Portfolio – If you don’t have time to pull together a full career portfolio, have at least two tangible examples of work projects that you’ve lead or contributed to. They can include a copy of your high-level project plan where you assigned tasks to team members. It can also be as simple as an email from your manager that praises you for your contributions.
- Attire – Dress for the role you are interviewing for. Even if you’re target position requires more casual workplace attire, choose an outfit for the interview that is at least one level above that dress code.
- Equipment – If your interview will be virtual, check your equipment to ensure that it is charged and in proper working order.
- Technology – Make sure that you have a strong Internet connection. If necessary, use a network cable to connect directly to your modem for your interview. This will strengthen your connection. Also, remember to put your phone on silent mode.
- Space – Choose a quiet space where you will not be disturbed.
