Write an Awesome Cover Letter for a Customer Service Position

Six-Step Cover Letter Success

We all know that customer service positions are in extremely high demand right now. So, now might be the time to take your customer service career to the next level. Are you a five-star professional, but need some help with your cover letter? Well, follow these steps to tell your career story and win recruiters’ and hiring managers’ interest.

Step 1

First, show respect to the reader and greet them. For instance, do your research to try and find out who the hiring manager or recruiter is. Ask any current employees at the company if they know, such as your LinkedIn® connections. Then, address your letter to that person directly. This will make an awesome first impression on a potential employer. If that’s not possible, use a generic greeting (i.e., Mr. “Smith; Dear Sir/Madam; Dear Hiring Manager; etc.).

Step 2

Then, use the first paragraph of your letter, introduce yourself. The person reading your letter needs to know who you are. They also need to know why you’re writing to them. So, include the title of the position you’re applying to, as well as, how you found out about it.

Step 3

The second paragraph is the “meat and potatoes” of your letter since this is where you highlight what makes you uniquely qualified for their open position. Match a couple of your career changing moments to the key requirements of the job and briefly describe how you solved a problem for your employer.

For example, tell the reader how you deescalated an unhappy client/customer situation. Share how you corrected a service-related error and regained that customer’s confidence by meeting their expectations against all odds. Or, describe how you go above and beyond daily to make your current customers feel valued.

Step 4

In the third paragraph invites the reader to review your resume to learn more about the qualifications that you can bring to their team. You should also ask the reader for a spot on their team and an opportunity to discuss that possibility.

Step 5

So, you’ve introduced yourself; shared strong evidence of your job-related competencies; offered a source of more information about what you bring to the table; and asked for the job. Now, use the fourth and final paragraph to close by thanking the reader for their consideration and letting them know that you look forward to hearing from them soon.

Step 6

Close with a business-appropriate salutation.

Conclusion

There you have it – your awesome career customer service professional cover letter.
