INTRODUCTION:
A job seeker asked, “How long should I wait for an interviewer to follow up with me after my interview.”
RESPONSE:
Well, my advice is to not wait. You need almost anything, or something else to occupy your time until the interviewer follows up. So, here is my three-step action plan for you to take after your interview.
ACTIONS STEPS:
- Number one is, “Don’t Wait.” One of the worst things that you can do following an interview is to wait around for their follow-up. Waiting torchers you mentally and emotionally because you are likely constantly thinking about the outcome.
- Number two is, “Pursue Other Opportunities.” You should never apply to one job and stop, or go on one interview and stop. Continue to be open to new opportunities and you might even find another one that is even better for you.
- Then, number three is, “Don’t Get Desperate.” This is exactly what will likely happen if you sit around waiting on an employer’s follow-up. When you get desperate, you do strange things, like following-up with the employer too often, annoying them. Then, they decide that they don’t want you working for them.
Speaking of you following up, the first piece of advise that I should have given you is to follow up. So, here is bonus step number 4. Immediately after your interview, send the interviewer(s) a thank you note. Thank them for taking the time to interview you. Re-emphasize your interest in the position. Thank them for considering you and for their continued consideration. Then, implement the “Three-Step-Non-Wait Plan” that I’ve shared with you today.
