Welcome to today’s motivational moment entitled, “How to Become Resilient,” with Cynthia O.
MOTIVATION:
Obstacles in life are inevitable. Some of them, like losing a child; losing other loved ones; facing health challenges, losing a job, losing your home; your relationship going bad, can be really hard to bounce back from. They can literally seem to knock you off your feet…like you’ll never recover. What matters is how we react to the challenges we’re faced with. We can meet them head-on, or we can fold and give up.
I know that there are many others, but I know about most of these personally.
What I can tell you is that, in spite of those experiences, I’m still standing. You may wonder how is that so. Well, I call it being resilient. No, it doesn’t happen over night. The pain that comes with these experiences is R-E-A-L and you must work through them if you’re going to emerge victorious. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
I’ve felt confused, angry, hopeless, helpless, useless, defeated, washed up, and devalued, I eventually overcame, though. I did the work to become whole again. So, today, I am sharing with you my recipe for how to become resilient.
First, know that you are not alone. Don’t give in to the temptation to withdraw from family and friends for fear of being judged. Use your God-given spirit of discernment to select who will be in your inner circle during your darkest hours.
Next, pray and read scripture. You need to be encouraged during life’s ups and downs. Know that God, through His word, will comfort you. The scripture, Psalm 94:19, was brought to my attention. It reads, “In the multitude of my thoughts within me, Thy comforts delight my soul.” You will start to think more clearly.
Seek help. There are programs and trained professionals who can develop an action/treatment plan to help you get back on track. They may also have connections to, and knowledge of resources to help sustain you and your family, depending on your unique circumstances.
Third, try and change your thoughts. Instead of constantly thinking about failure, heartbreak, or shortcomings, imagine yourself being successful again. Challenges don’t last forever. You can be successful again. It amazes me how much of your resilience is based on your mindset. So, imagining where you want to be on the other side of this valley experience will inspire you to think of ways that you can achieve your goal.
Fourth, take at least one action step each day to support your vision for yourself. It can be one small step. For instance, if you want to write a book, do your draft outline of the topics that you will write about. If you want to lose weight, start by baking instead of frying your foods. If you want to read the Bible in one year, start by reading Genesis, Chapter 1. Read chapter 2 the next day, and so on.
Remember that if you do nothing, things will stay the same or get worse. I know that you don’t want that for yourself. That’s not what you deserve. So, don’t sell yourself short by accepting a season as a lifetime. Remember, the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, “For everything there is a season, A time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest.” So, treat your time of despair and difficulty as the time to prepare for your awesome harvest. Be your best, blessed, confident, resilient, unstoppable self.
