What Employers Think When Candidates Omit Work Experience from their Resume

Challenge

A job seeker asked, “What do employers think when candidates leave work experience off of their resume?” They left their most recent job after only two months when they realized that it was not a good fit for them.

Three Points to Consider

My experience has been that an employer’s realization that a candidate omitted work experience from their resume did not cost them further consideration. Check out the three points below that should help you to breathe easy about this question and the possible outcome.

Point #1

If a potential employer is interested in speaking with you and they feel that you possess the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for success in their job, they will typically initiate a pre-screening process. That’s when they identify their initial pool of candidates, which usually consists of several people.

During their pre-screening process, they will usually ask you why you left your former job or why do you want to leave your current job. The first tip that you need to follow is to not speak negatively about your current or former employer. Simply explain that you quickly realized that the job was not a good fit and that you left for an opportunity that was more closely aligned with you career goals.

Point #2

The main thing to remember is to always remain positive. You can provide an honest, succinct answer without disparaging that employer or the position that you held. Many employers won’t even hold it against you for leaving a position that was not a good fit for you.

Point #3

So, rest assured that this will not be the end of your career. As a matter of fact, many job coaches, including myself, advise job seekers to only list or highlight jobs from their employment history that are directly related to their field or position of interest.

So, doing this will typically not be looked upon as unethical, unless you are trying to hide something, such as being fired.

Conclusion
