Question
So, a job seeker asked if they should apply to a new position with an employer who previously fired them.
Response
My answer is a resounding, Yes, for a number of reasons.
Reasons
Reason 1
You could have held the former position when you were new in the job market. You may be more mature now and better understand what lead to your involuntary separation from employment with the organization.
Reason 2
The current management team and/or selection committee could be different from those involved when you were initially hired with the organization.
Reason 3
The company could have a policy of not automatically rendering former employees as not rehire eligible just because they were involuntarily terminated. Especially when their employment was terminated for something other than the willful violation of policy or any act of violence, harassment, intimidation, bullying, etc. Those types of actions will likely land you in the category of not being eligible for rehire.
I say seize the opportunity. The interviewers may even ask you what makes you a better candidate or would make you a better employee this time than previously.
So, you could explain that you mature professionally and personally and that you understand why your employment was terminated previously. Additionally, you could explain that you are interested in the current position because it is in line with the type of position that you see yourself holding to achieve your career goals.
Last, you could also share how much you admire the organization and that you regret the fact that you were involuntarily separated before.
Like I said earlier…Seize the opportunity and see how it works out.
Conclusion
One sure-fire things is that if you do not apply, you will not be considered. The worst things that could happen if you apply is that you either are not selected for an interview, or you interview and are not hired. However, you won’t have to look back and wonder, “What it.?”
