So, how do you write a resume when you’re have a very diverse work history and skill set?

It sounds like the functional resume format might work best for you; however, you need to do a little work on the front end to make it work.

1. First, list the duties that you have performed on each job. Then, for each duty, list the skill set that you have used to be successful in that area. This will inform your resume content presentation and the section titles.

2. After your header, you will need to write a two-to-three-line summary of your experience and skill set.

3. Then build the functional sub-sections of your resume. For example, if your review of your work history reveals that you have utilized communication, technological, creativity, coaching, writing, development, analytical skills, etc., these will be the titles of each subsection of the work history section of your functional resume. You will round out your work history by listing the duties that you performed to exhibit each skill.

4. Next, build your education section by listing your formal and informal education and training that is related to the skill sets in the work history section. Do so in reverse chronological order.

5. Afterwards, and last, but definitely not least, list your employers in reverse chronological order of when you worked for each one. Simply list each employer’s name, your dates of employment (month and year), and the title of the position(s) that you held with that employer.

There you have it…your functional resume that showcases your strongest skills that you’ve developed throughout your career.
