Eliminate Distractions

INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to this motivational moment entitled, “Eliminate Distractions.”

MOTIVATIONS:

I have lost count of the number of times I’ve set personal or professional goals only to have my plans derailed. I wonder why that happens so often. For me, it’s usually due to my getting distracted. The shiny new object syndrome lures me away from progress. I can’t speak for you, but this is the funny thing for me. The distractions that I encounter are rarely shiny or new. The latest distraction is only “new” because it’s different from the distraction immediately before it.

At work, they are typically routine requests, a demanding customer, or technology glitches that throw me off course. Personally, it may be a phone call; life responsibilities as a wife and mom; or lack of planning on my part. Business-wise, it’s all of the above. So, I’ve decided to do something about it. I know that resolutions are for the new year; however, I’m making a resolution right now. I guess I’ll call it my Fall resolution. And, I have a hunch that I’m not the only one standing in these shoes. So, I’m sharing my Fall resolution with you in case you’d like to join me. Here it is…

Realistically, we can’t eliminate distractions. We can manage them, though. So, I resolve to manage them with my schedule. I resolve to write things down. I resolve to break BIG ideas into small steps. I resolve to transform those small steps into daily action items. I resolve to schedule time in my daily routine for at least one professional, personal, and business action item. I resolve, that when possible, to not jump haphazardly from focusing on a scheduled action item to a distraction item. When distractions arise, if I have the authority, I will schedule them as well.

Finally, I plan to stick to my schedule, and when the new year arrives, I will be ahead of the game. You with me?

CONCLUSION:

I hope that you’ve taken good notes and resolved to join me on this journey, because we have lots to accomplish.
