Hello and welcome to today’s motivational moment entitled, “Change is Good,” with Cynthia O.
MOTIVATION:
Because we’re creatures of habit, change is often a dreaded phenomenon. We tend to prefer the routine…knowing what to expect next. We live by the motto, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Even the thought of change can cause some of us to experience panic attacks. At the root of it all is our fear of the unknown and it robs us of our potential. One of the most memorable quotes that I’ve ever heard is, “Fear has killed more dreams than failure ever could.” However, when we “change” our mindset, and start to embrace change, we soon realize that all change is not bad. Then, as our focus transitions from what we can’t do to what is possible, miraculous things can happen. We step out on faith and try a new way of doing something. And if that new way allows us to accomplish our goals more quickly and more efficiently, we wish that we had taken the leap even sooner.
Now, I’m not saying that we will like all change or the outcomes of it, because we won’t. Just like any situation that we face in this life, we have to decide which change is beneficial and which is not. Case in point – my employer recently migrated to a new human resources information system, which empowers managers to have a more active role in managing pay and employment transactions that impact their employees. My team and I managed those processes in our old system, so some managers resisted the new way of doing this work. But after some group and one-on-one training sessions, many of them marvel at how easy the new process is.
So, I recommend that, if you’re nervous about some upcoming changes in your life, whether personal or professional, take it slowly. Learn as much as you can about the benefits that you could stand to reap from embracing the change. Talk with others, whom you trust, who have experienced the same type of change that you’re facing. Take advantage of resources, like your employer’s Employee Assistance Program (EA)P, so that trained professionals can give you tips on managing the stress that sometimes accompanies change. Or journal each day and try to write at least one positive outcome that could result from the change. I believe that you will begin to not feel so powerless in the face of change. Instead, I pray that you will feel empowered, by it, and in spite of it. Come on, You Got This!
